Building a Middle School, Physically and Conceptually

Planning for Change

SMP worked with the middle school faculty for two years, developing a Portrait of a Learner and the pathways that would lead to that result. The faculty also chose to define the school as “a place where everyone fits everywhere.”

Working with Architects while Preparing Teachers and Students

As SMP worked with the school’s architects to match the physical design to the concepts being developed, we helped find ways to integrate new ideas into the old building, in order to model the future.

Design for the Future

Built with flexible collaboration spaces, transparent team learning spaces, a running track through the halls of the building to create space for adolescent physicality, and safe, ungendered toilet rooms, this middle school is designed to be that “place where everyone fits everywhere.”
